STEL is a team of world-class scientists,
researchers and engineers.
Lisa M Larkin, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Molecular & Integrative Physiology at the University of Michigan. She holds a joint appointment in the Biomedical Engineering Department and is co-director of the Skeletal Tissue Engineering Laboratory. Dr. Larkin has 25 years of expertise in musculoskeletal physiology, specifically focused on ligament, tendon, muscle and bone tissue engineering. Her laboratory has pioneered methods to co-culture scaffold-free tissue constructs to engineer functional tissues and their interfaces, and Dr. Larkin holds multiple US and global patents for her inventions.
Ellen Arruda, PhD is Chair of the University of Michigan’s Mechanical Engineering department and a Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Macromolecular Science and Engineering. Dr. Arruda has expertise on the development and characterization of functional engineered tissue including ligament, tendon, myotendinous junction, bone and bone/ligament. She also has 20 years of experience in soft tissue biomechanics, polymer mechanics, in the design of specialized mechanical testing apparatus and software for soft materials and tissue testing and in constitutive model development of soft materials, including biomaterials.
Dr. Edward Wojtys is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at the University of Michigan. Dr. Wojtys has over 30 years of experience in diagnosing, treating, and researching ACL injuries in humans and has performed the pilot surgeries in sheep. His clinical and research interests relate to knee injuries, their treatment and prevention. Dr. Wojtys is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and received the 2016 Kappa Delta Award from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS). He is editor-in-chief for Sports Health: A Multidisciplinary Approach and co-chair of the National Football League (NFL)’s Orthopaedic Research Committee.
